Final Reflection

I think that I learned from this course lots of things such as, how to communicate with different cultures through Soliya Platform and this can be reflected in my reflection blogpost that was about Soliya. It was the first time to interact with people all around the world online and it gave me an idea of how different cultures think about different things. I also learned how to protect my digital identity through Social media platforms such as, Facebook, Instagram and twitter. I knew that I shouldn’t share my location through these applications, because it seems dangerous and we discussed this at May 7 class Data Detox also I wrote a blog post about it. Additionally, I learned how to create a digital narrative story game as, it was my first time to do a game. The game was about the COVID-19 during Ramadan. Moreover, I also learned about how healthy is the internet and I also wrote a blog post about it. How internet is healthy talks about how mobile applications can be tracking you and lots of things like that.

On the other hand, I enjoyed reading about how to protect my digital identity and I think the readings that we were assigned to do helped us and gave us full image of how to protect it and be safe. Furthermore, this course made me create an account on twitter and I never thought that I would want to create an account on twitter before. From my experience on twitter, I found that it is interesting than Facebook and I convinced my friends that don’t have a twitter account to create an account.

I also learned some things from what we done in class such as, the game called spent. This game taught me what should I do If I was in a certain situation such as talking an important decision for a poor family of a poor person and this decision would affect the poor family or the poor person. I think that in my career I will be taking care about how to protect myself online as, I might be hacked and it could lead to a huge problem in my work.

If I were to show someone my learning in this course, I would show my blog post about the game about COVID-19 During Ramadan I how I managed to create an imagined story and link them with each other. The goal of this game was to create awareness of how people should communicate with each other in different situations and there is a blogpost talking about this topic. Additionally, I would also show how I protected my social media accounts and not to post every single thing about my personal life. I also learned a lot from the movie that we were assigned to watch “The Great Hack” It was a very knowledgeable movie about how companies like data Analytica could use our personal information and analyze it in order to know to convince us about who should we elect in the presidential election for example as shown in the movie.

If I could change 2 things about the course to improve it. The first thing is about Soliya, as what I want to change about is that there should be a break within the 3 hours that we are sitting in front of the PC. Soliya sessions would be easier if it was more than one session over the week for example it could be two classes per week and the duration of the class would be and hour and a half. The second thing that would make the course more interesting that we could watch more movies like “The Great Hack” linked to the theme of the course and then we reflect on them.

I think the kind of person who should take this course would be a creative person and is open to social media and should be open to discuss anything because that person will have to communicate with people around the world. This person should be knowledgeable and aware of the technological developments that happening all around the world.

Dr Maha during our online classes gave us an option that if we can’t attend the class, we should watch a video or read an article and write a blogpost and that sit. It will be as I’ve attended the lecture and earned my participation grade. I think this was a very good option and it released lots of stress while I am at home. Additionally, I think that writing a blogpost will give me the opportunity to mention lots of details regarding the topic we are discussing compared with attending the lecture as, colleagues and including me should participate equally and should be given more time to elaborate on the idea. I think the option that we are given is beneficial for all of the class. However, what could be bad about that option is that we could miss what other colleagues would say in the lecture.

We were also given a choice in the Digital Literacies pathways and I chose the theoretical part to do which is reading and writing a reflection on 3 articles. I think that this opportunity of being given an option helped us a lot during the semester.

Finally, I think that I enjoyed reading articles than watching videos, because I like reading in general. However, not all of the class would like to read articles so, I think that the choice of watching or reading would make life easier for all of the class. Moreover, I have chosen to to do a game than writing a poem, also when I heard that we have the option to do game instead of the poem it was easier for me to do my game COVID-19 during Ramadan. Overall, I think that the course was not considered a load on me but, I was enjoying going to class, attending online classes or doing assignments.

Tools Reflection

First of all, I am going to reflect on the tools used throughout the semester in this course Core 2096 (Digital literacies) and other tools used by other courses. These tools are Zoom, Slack, Blackboard discussion thread, Google slides, Soliya’s Platform and twitter.

To begin with, the most tool that was commonly used throughout my courses was Zoom. This tool was a platform used to take our Online lectures. It was my first time to use this application. In my opinion, I think that it is very useful way of communication between professors and students. I learned from zoom that if I wanted to mute the sound, I should press the mute button, because at the beginning I didn’t know that I have that option. I also knew that it could be used as a way of proctoring exams and this gives advantages to professors. I also learned how to create a meeting and invite my friends to work online. While using this application I knew how to share screens with professors and my friends.

Moreover, the second tool is Slack and it was a platform similar to a WhatsApp group that includes all the class and the professor Dr. Maha Bali. It was a platform that is divided into 5 sections. These sections are assignments, digital literacies, general, random and soliya. These sections are used for different purposes. It was a very useful tool as when we wanted to contact each other we can find each other easily. If I wanted to ask Dr. Maha anything I would find a quick response. I think it is a very useful tool where Dr Maha can remind us about and assignments due. I really liked this tool because it was making things easier to communicate with each other.

Additionally, Blackboard discussion thread was used in another course that I am taking called “History of political theory”. This tool is used where we can interact with our professor. The professor can Post questions and we can respond to this question and we can also respond to other colleagues comments. I think I it was useful because it gives us the opportunity to interact between each other. I learned that I could use the the discussion thread on blackboard. It was the first time to use this tool in this and previous semesters at AUC. What I didn’t like about this tool that the questions might be deleted or removed for some reason along with our answers and comments.

However, I used google slides while I was creating the digital narrative game which was about COVID-19 during Ramadan. I discovered some new things in google slides such as linking the slides with each other to create a story. I think it was a good way of presenting our game. one of the advantages that we can share slides between me and Lama and Dr. Maha. I also used it in another course which is called “Business Finance” and it was a group presentation. What I liked about google slides is that more than one person can work on the same PowerPoint at the same time.

Soliya’s Platform was the most interesting tool. In Soliya we can meet with people all over the world and discuss varies different topics such as what is dialogue and what forms our identity and so on. The good thing about Soliya platform that we used it while we are suffering form COVID-19 and we were staying at home. On the other hand, the bad thing is that the duration of the session is to long because we had to talk with each other for 3 hours without any breaks. But the good thing is I learned how other cultures think differently. Regarding the thing that I developed through using this platform was how to evaluate and think about every single word said by different people and react upon it.

The final tool is twitter; this tool is my favorite. Twitter is similar to Facebook, but on twitter you can reach any known person on this application and they also can respond to you. I convinced some of my friends to download twitter and they liked it so much and they started to post tweets about different things. What I really liked while using this app is the memes that was there. I also followed lots of newspaper twitter accounts and known people’s twitter accounts. I learned that there is a new way of communicating could be done through twitter.

Finally, I think that the most useful tool is Zoom because it is the common tool used throughout varies courses. Zoom sessions were very important because it was the only platform where we can communicate with our professors online in some courses. Then comes slack which is similar to WhatsApp and it was beneficial because we can easily communicate through text messaging with our professor. In addition to Blackboard discussion thread, was only a good platform for asking and answering questions. Google slides is useful due to that more than one can work on the same PowerPoint. Regarding soliya, I learned a lot form this platform and learned how to communicate with different cultures and how they are thinking about each and every thing. The last tool is twitter; I think that I will use it as a main social media platform. I that I will be using Twitter in the future.

Digital Literacies pathways (How healthy is the internet?)

Understanding the issue:

The problem is shown through invading privacy through Facebook and other accounts via Social Media, just as Cambridge Analytica did. This information was used for political purposes. everyone is calling for more privacy, some of which are inspired by the idea that companies should deal with our data with the same care that the bank treats our money. The current reality is man-made and we have the power to change it.

Your mobile apps are tracking you:

There are also applications installed on the mobile phone that send data about your identity, preferences or your actual location, as this is a big problem that is documented by new research. Invading privacy leaves people vulnerable. For this reason, I believe that steps and procedures should be taken to protect the privacy of online accounts accounts. From my point of view, there should be campaigns that raise awareness and tell what are the advantages and the disadvantages of each application. People should not give permission for any application to have access to the phone where personal information is.

Spotlight: Rethinking digital ads

This article is talking about application developers, insurance agents, data brokers, hackers and scammers who collect data about everything we do, and this is considered a violation of privacy. This article also talks about digital advertising, which is a blessing for the global economy. And that these ads are a major source of income.

I also knew that in this article that outside China have achieved successes by developing and designing products that focus on attracting user attention and maximizing interaction to maximize revenue from advertising, and this allows interference in the privacy of users. These ads can be used by people with criminal or hate narratives who can post videos on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook in a few minutes.

This article includes that ads can be made in a way that is more privacy-friendly. It means that these companies will get rid of the data registered in them. We as internet users should have more awareness about privacy, so that we do not rely on companies that protect us. It is clear that data privacy regulations in many countries have improved and that those who collect data will be subject to legal accountability.

Coordinating complaints for data privacy in Europe April 2019

This article talks about coordinating complaints related to data privacy in Europe, where civil society organizations in Europe play a crucial role in enhancing the effectiveness of the European Public Data Protection Regulation by using provisions to challenge the established practices of some of the largest technology companies in the world. The implementation of the law began in May 2018, and complaints efforts across Europe began to pay off. I think that it became clear from the article that due to the effectiveness of this law, the number of complaints increased.

The General Data Protection Regulation has given an important right to individuals to request a copy of the data collected on their own. In my view, I believe that law and regulations must be implemented in order to reduce violations, abuses and infringements on the privacy of individuals; Because this is a crime punishable by law.

May 7 Class (Data Detox)

First of all, I really enjoyed the video, it was so funny. I learned from the data detox video that I shouldn’t share any personal information on any social media platform. This is because that social media platforms collects information about us without our knowledge. I also learned that I shouldn’t keep my phone location turned on all the time, as it will be easy to anyone to know where I am and that sounds dangerous. I personally always make sure that I am turning off the location settings for any application such as snapchat, Facebook and Instagram.

Additionally, l learned from the Privacy article that in order to protect my phone I should delete any personal information from it. I also knew from the article that I must delete any application that I am not using and before deleting it I must unsubscribe from the application. I knew that there are some added privacy boosters, you can install extras known as “add-ons and extensions. They are easy mini programs for the browser that can make my online activity more private.

Monday May 4 Equity and inequity in digital and information infrastructure

Information Equity

One of the things I learned from the article Information equity that in order to live in a good society the information must be accessed and available for all people. This information must be used in a way that benefits the community as a whole. Another thing is that there are private companies that are responsible for decisions that affect opportunities to access resources.

There are two basic elements to obtain information: social capital, which is the benefit people obtain from relationships with others, and financial capital relates to the amount of money. Social capital is a personal relationship that you can take to your advantage. Additionally, information is a basis for building social capital to reach the required interaction and to provide advice and support to them in return. I think that social capital is all that happens on social networks in Egypt, where people provide advice to each other and as a result they support each other. Communication between people take place so easily that I can call my friends on social networks easily.

All information you need in your life you will find easily on the Internet. For the telecommunications network, which was implemented by the Egyptian government quickly and distinctly was not achieved without the presence of a network of information via the Internet.

The Great Hack

This film is about a company called Cambridge Analytica, and this company is gathering data from Facebook users and influencing them and pushing them to vote for Donald Trump. Cambridge Analytica is using psychological studies as a method by the company to influence more than fifty million users. To influence this number of people, the company must have an accurate information network to reach the company’s goal. The goal is pushing people towards a specific direction.

One of the things that I learned from this movie is not to share personal information via Facebook or any social networking site, because this takes advantage of me and the result is to influence my opinion in a targeted way. I also learned not to believe anything posted on Facebook or any other social networking site, because it could be fabricated. From my Point of view, I think that such companies use their intelligence to reach what is required on the political arena, and actually this achieves profit for them, because the information it collects is a treasure that achieves the desired goal, which is persuading people to do things such as voting for a presidential candidate that they wouldn’t vote for.

Additionally, one of the questions that I asked myself, is how to achieve a democratic atmosphere while using this method. The method that is used is influencing my opinion or vote in a targeted way by Cambridge Analytica. Finally, I was very surprised when I knew the existence of such companies in countries that were supposed to be democratic.

COVID-19 During Ramadan (Game Reflection)

Me and Lama as group made a game called COVID-19 during Ramadan. This is a narrative game that shows a daily routine of university students. It shows how they are dealing with their daily routine while they are fasting in Ramadan for example online classes, assignments and exams. We thought that COVID-19 during Ramadan would be a challenge for almost everyone, because Ramadan Rituals is about going out having iftar with your family and friends. However, at the mean time it would be very difficult to do so while we are experiencing this Virus. In every Scenario we did we gave the player 2 options. The first option would be risky in terms of catching the virus and the second option would be the right choice to make to protect himself or herself and the surrounding people from catching a virus.

While creating this game we wanted to make it obvious to the player that he should take the right decision and the goal of this game to create awareness for how people should deal with each other during Ramadan and COVID-19. On the other hand, I think that if I had more time I would have spent much more time developing this game to be and application to be downloaded from any electronic store. It would be in a very high quality in terms of is graphics and colors and it could have cartoon characters that would show the game more clearly and would be more effective.

I learned from this game to take the right decision and how to deal with people while I am going out and how to create an imagined narrative story that we are experiencing it in our real life. For me it was my first time to do a game and it was very challenging to imagine how people would be dealing with this crisis, as it is our first time to experience such a virus. Additionally, I also learnt how to link the scenarios and my ideas with each other and how to build on these ideas to create a complete narrative story.

In the first draft we started to brainstorm our ideas (Scenarios) in a word document and link these scenarios with each other as much as we could. However, in the second draft we copied it in to a google Slide and we added consequences (results) for every choice the player makes, as this was based on the feedback from our professor Dr. Maha Bali. We also added some pictures related to the topic which is COVID-19 during Ramadan.

Before creating this game, I asked lots of my family members and friends about how people should deal with each other in these days. My father and mother agreed that we should stay at home safely and people must take all the safety precautions that is needed. However, my friends had a different point of view which that it wouldn’t be a huge problem if met in small groups, therefore I think that I would be very risky to do what my friends said, because it can lead to catching the virus.  Finally, I think that was a good opportunity for me to learn how to create a game and build up my ideas to form a Narrative game. I actually learnt new skills from creating this game.

Soliya Reflection

Session 1:

In the first session we began to introduce ourselves and each one of us said his name, age, and his university and in which major. Then the facilitators Wren and Sena introduced themselves and we discussed what does dialogue mean and I said that it is between 2 or more people we can see a dialogue in a film or a play. We differentiated between what is dialogue and debate. The difference is that in the debate we have to prove our side and make it stronger. We also mentioned the qualities of a dialogue and it is how we respect each other opinions.

The facilitators also asked what sort of norms and expectations we would have from the dialogue. We said that before you disagree you must hear first others opinions and if you disagree with other person we have to do it in a polite way. we talked also about people who can’t engage in a dialogue in a society. It depends on the age level. It has to be on a similar level. I said that in Egyptian society we have limits, to what you talk about. Support individuals within a group in understanding their common objectives.Help people collectively move through a process.Structure conversations and apply appropriate group facilitation techniques to keep discussions effective.

Wren and Sena our facilitators asked us about aspects of identity and I said Egyptian because I am proud to be from Egyptians Student I am a student at AUC Political scientist because I like to be engaged in political conversations. Leadership skills: I like to take the lead in group project. Brother as I have to sisters older than me. Hard worker because I like to work hard in everything that I have to do like assignments and things like that. Well organized as I am always keen to organize my room and keep it clean and tidy. At the beginning of my semester at AUC I did the same activity of aspects of identity with my Professor Maha Bali.

Wren and Sena asked what do you do you expect to learn from Soliya. I said that “we must take the opportunity to learn things about different cultures.” However, my colleague Melissa agreed with me and said “I agree. It would be a boring conversation if we were the same. Better we have different perspectives on things.” They also asked “Do you think you might approach a topic differently if you are looking at it through your gender, as opposed through your nationality, for example.” I answered “It depends on the topic.” Melissa said” On some topics, one aspect of my identity might be the most relevant.”

We also talked about if the offline and online identities are the same. My colleague Ricardo said “This isn’t the same as an offline conversation. My type of humor is formed by my Italian background. I’m used to touch people, use my hands. Not the same through a camera.” Additionally, I said that “Some people can express themselves more freely online / offline.”

Session 2:

This session was with my Dr. Maha Bali my professor at the University. We talked about well-being and what does well being mean. I said that well-being is theexperience of health, happiness, and prosperity. It includes having good mental health, high life satisfaction, a sense of meaning or purpose, and ability to manage stress. More generally, well-being is just feeling well. Additionally, well-being has many components, such as mental, psychological, social, emotional, and spiritual.

We also discussed how people can manage stress during the COVID-19 Crisis, as everyone around the world stayed at home. This would be effecting people badly, so we talked about how people can get over it and live they healthy life and how to be productive at work, university or school. I really enjoyed this session because we had a very interesting conversation and I learnt form it a lot such as how to manage stress.

Session 3:

In this session I experienced a very bad internet connection, but hopefully I managed to read the chat. Sena and wren Asked us a question at the beginning of our session which was “If you have access to a time machine where and when would you want to go.” I said that I would want to go back to the school senior year, because it was so much fun. However, Ricardo said” that he would love to go back to the 90’s pop culture.

Then we were also asked to draw what the facilitators say, we followed wren instructions. I thought that I was drawing an elephant because when he said that the creature has a long tube trunk. I learned from this activity that each and every one can take this description and can translate it according to his or her perception. We also talked about abortion and how every country that we live in responds to it.

Session 4:

This was our last session and I entered the discussion at 6:45 as I was having iftar. This session was very interesting as our facilitators asked us “what is one thing you’ve found to do that has made you happy during the coronavirus quarantine? (If you feel comfortable) What is something that you have been worrying about during this uncertain time? If was there I could say “the most thing that made me happy that I had an opportunity to sit with my family and give them more time. However, the most thing that I was worried about was the online classes and how would I adapt to this change.”

Another question was “How do you choose what information you want to share or produce on social media?” I said “I like to post pictures on my own or with my family.” However, Ricardo and Melissa said that they hardly post anything.

Then finally we had a free flowing discussion about Corona lockdown and how it affects. I mentioned that in Egypt we normally had a curfew from 8 PM to 6 AM every day. I also mentioned that I was using different type of applications to talk with my friends video call such as Facebook messenger and house party.  They also asked us What motivates you to believe the government’s recommendations? Why do you follow these guidelines / rules?” I said that the government transparency should motivate me to follow its guidelines. Following the government guidelines is a must because I belong to this country and I must respect what the government say because it will protect me from catching the virus. I added also that the government is doing a great effort to protect people from catching the virus.

Conclusion:

Finally, I think that the dialogue in Soliya is different from any other dialogues I had before. In Soliya I met different people from different cultures and I gained a new experience which was we all talked freely expressing their opinions which was based on their cultural differences. This platform was different because every session we choose to have an open discussion about a topic that we chose. However, other platforms that I use in university is based in the professor lecturing on zoom meetings.

I think that I enjoyed these sessions because they were very engaging and I knew new people from different countries. From these sessions I knew that I am a sociable person and I was able to interact with the facilitators and my colleagues and this would be shown from the reflection that I had done for the 4 sessions above.

What I can do to foster my communication skills online that I should try to lead the discussion and I am thinking about taking training to be one of the facilitators in one day hopefully. However, what I should do regarding the face to face interaction I can be contacting people on social media such as Facebook, Instagram and snapchat etc. all in all I think that I gained a lot from this experience and I think that I benefited a lot from this opportunity.

Learning Online” (made specifically for COVID-19 crisis) (Reflection)

I think that the online learning course module would be useful for lots of unknowledgeable professors and students regarding usage of the online devices needed and how to use them in an effective way. The online learning would be useful if you have the required technological advances such as smart phones, tablets, laptops and what is more important is the WIFI. Lately, in my university AUC shifted to the online learning due to the spread of the COVID-19 Virus. This Virus is considered a very dangerous due to its symptoms, so the university shifted to the E-learning. I think this step is a very good step to get over this virus. Additionally, it could be a very good opportunity that the world would shift to the online learning instead of face to face interaction. As a result of the online learning we need to be equipped with the suitable technology that would help us to go through the online process.

Last week was the start of the online learning, there were recorded lectures associated with discussion thread on blackboard. However, other courses made an online class on zoom. I personally preferred the zoom class, as it is more interactive than the recorded lecture because during the recorded lecture I can’t raise questions.  Through the module that I’ve went through I think that the professors will face some challenges during the online learning, for example communicating with students regularly due to the poor internet connection that would be experienced. The only way for a student to ask question would be through sending an email, typing questions on a shared document.

Moreover, I would prefer face to face interactive learning, because it would be easier and there will be no challenged such as poor internet connection, electricity cut. From my personal experience, last week I had an online lecture but our professor experienced an electricity cut. I think if she was experienced and knew enough about the online equipment, she would use her smart phone and mobile data 4G instead of the laptop. Each university must make sure that they are giving the required trainings and required devices and train professors to be ready by any other alternatives.

I think that people must take the online learning more serious because from what I’ve seen I knew that people are taking this period of online learning as a holiday. This was mentioned I the module. We have to do a plan for our day as if we are in the university. While you are working from home you can have chocolate, candies chips to keep you motivated during work. Finally, the main goal of the module to inform students and professors of what they should do exactly during the online learning. From my point of view I think that the course is beneficial for both professors and students.
